Why am I using my own API key?

We don't want to own your data. When you use your own API key, all of your tuning data is associated with your OpenAI account. You can verify this yourself by logging into the OpenAI developer platform and visiting either the files page or the fine-tunes page after you have completed a fine-tuning with Big Corporation. You will see all of the data that we generated together. This means that even if you step away from our platform for a bit you never lose access to the data you worked hard to create.

Can I just pay extra to hand the API stuff off to y'all?

Unfortunately not. On top of our dedication to data ownership, we also have a dedication to value. There is a world in which we just set a price high enough that we are either guaranteed to cover the cost of, or even turn a profit on, your API usage. In this world however, we feel that it puts us at odds because the value of our platform is not access to OpenAI, it's ease of use. We don't want you to have to do the math of "Well, this is kind of nice, but I don't know if I'm using that chat functionality enough to justify the cost". With this pricing scheme, you are only paying us if you think that our platform is adding value and providing you the tools you need to engineer your data.
